Sydney's Randwick Racecourse, home of the Championships. Randwick Racecourse map, barrier positions, track bias indicators.
Administration: Australian Turf Club, which also governs racing at Rosehill Gardens & Warwick Farm - australianturfclub.com.au
Location: approx 6kms from Sydney CBD.
Feature Races: Randwick is racing headquarters in Sydney host to many of Australia’s top races including the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, The Doncaster Mile, The TJ Smith. The Queen Elizabeth Stakes is the richest WFA race over 2000m in the world and the second richest race in Australia after the Melbourne Cup. The Doncaster Mile is run under handicap conditions over 1600m. It takes a champion horse to carry top weight to victory, most runners are the lighter weighted 3 or 4yo’s.
How to get to Randwick Racecourse:
By Car: Located about 6kms from the Sydney CBD via the Cahill Expressway, parking is available on course.
By Train: The closest station to Randwick is Central Station. Buses depart from and return to Central Station (Chalmers St) every 15 minutes on race day.
1000, 1100m & 1200m starts: Barrier stalls are located in an angled chute at the back of the course. Straight run to the home turn, inside barriers have a slight advantage.
1400m: Starts in a chute off the back of the course, angled run to the first corner then a straight run to the home turn. Inside barriers have a slight advantage.
1600m: Located in a short chute off the back of the course. Straight run of 650m until the first turn, inside barriers are a slight advantage.
1800m: Begins on the course proper on the left hand side of the track. Barriers are of little importance.
2000m: Located on the turn just out of the home straight. Runners are on a curve until they reach the back stretch of the course. Fields are restricted, inside barriers are a distinct advantage, particularly when the rail is out.
2400m: Barrier stalls are positioned in front of the grandstand in the home straight with just 250m before the first turn. Starting gates should be of little importance due to the distance involved, however the majority of winners start from inside barrier 8.
3200m: Only a couple of races over this distance every year including the Sydney Cup. Barriers should be of little consequence but stats show that more winners have drawn inside barrier 9.
See the Sydney Track Bias Report for more information on this weeks racing conditions, including scratchings & weather.
The Track: The course proper is the largest turf racecourse in NSW with a circumference of 2227 metres, length of the home straight is 410 metres long and 28 metres wide. A large, sweeping track with a rise from the 300m mark to the winning post in the home straight, horses race in a clockwise direction. Most runners will have their chance when the rail is in the True position and the going is Good.
There is a second course at Randwick, known as Kensington (or Kenso), constructed using the Strathayr racing surface. Moonee Valley is the only other metropolitan racecourse in Australia to use this type of track. The going will be most often rated between Good and Dead, but will not always suit horses who like to race on top of the ground. It is also a smaller course, being positioned inside the course proper, so on pace runners will often have an advantage and inside barriers are preferred. Kensington is currently under review due to poor performance in the cooler months.

Run as an Autumn event since 1979, the AJC Derby (now known as the Australian Derby) is the premier race for three-year-old stayers during the Autumn Racing Carnival. Notable winners of the AJC Derby include Phar Lap, Tulloch and Kingston Town, in more recent times Sky Heights, Naturalism, Mahogany, Octagonal and Durbridge. It can also be a good form indicator for races during the Spring including the Caulfield Cup.
The Doncaster Mile is run over 1600m, one of the premier races at Randwick every year. Other races during this racing carnival include the AJC Oaks and the The Galaxy. Prizemoney for the Randwick Queen Elizabeth Stakes was upgraded in 2014 to make it the richest 2000m WFA event in the world. An attractive race for horses who might also be aimed at the Melbourne Cup and the Cox Plate. Betting on horse racing in Sydney during the Autumn Carnival is available HERE.
