Cox Plate Form Guide: the Cox Plate is one of Australia's premier WFA races, along with the Queen Elizabeth Stakes which is held at Randwick during the Championships. Class is usually an important factor with many great horses claiming the trophy over the years including Phar Lap, Tulloch, Kingston Town, Super Impose, Saintly, Might & Power, Sunline, Northerly and Makybe Diva. There have also been some successful 3yo horses in this event, they have a distinct advantage against the rest of the field under the Weight For Age conditions. Best lead up form for the Cox Plate includes the Turnbull, George Main, Caulfield Guineas and Caulfield Cup.
Cox Plate - Melbourne Cup Double winners: Nightmarch (1929), Phar Lap (1930), Rising Fast (1954), Saintly (1996), Might And Power (1998), Makybe Diva (2005).
Cox Plate Track Bias Report: Moonee Valley is a tight velodrome circuit with sharp turns and is constructed with the Strathayr surface which is natural turf on top of a sand base. Some horses do not race well here so look for runners with previous success at this course. The ideal racing position at this track is just behind the leaders, one off the fence. An inside barrier assists in all races, but is of less importance in the Cox Plate due to the distance involved. Horses must make their run mid-race to gain a good position before the home turn or wait for a lucky run either on the inside fence or out wide.
